We always recommend when possible going with carry-on to prevent any luggage items, but overall some students choose to check a bag, while others will pack light enough to board with just a carry-on and a backpack. It's your choice!

Either way, we suggest starting with the packing list provided for your child's program as we do our best to design each list specific to each program with all the essentials. Know that each child does need the ability to lift and carry their own luggage through the airport, occasionally up or down a flight of stairs and as needed during their program.

  • No you do not need to check your bags, we recommend if you can keep everything with you as carry on it is travelers best practice, you know exactly where your stuff is. If you need to check a bag, please be aware that depending on your ticket, you may need to pay separately for a checked bag. Weight allowances vary between checked and carry-on luggage.
  • Checked is 23 kg or 50 lbs
  • For internal flights, the checked bag will be included as well.
  • Peru and Thailand, checked bags on those internal flights as well
  • Weight: 50lbs for the airline to make sure each student can carry the bags by themselves. We are not checking them for most programs but they need to be able to carry them.

SOP: Luggage Management for Rustic Pathways Programs

Objective

To provide guidelines on whether to check a bag or use carry-on luggage when traveling to or from a Rustic Pathways program, ensuring the safety and convenience of all participants.

Key Steps

  1. Prefer Carry-On: Recommend opting for carry-on luggage to avoid the risk of lost items.
  2. Pack Light: Encourage packing light to enable traveling with just a carry-on.
  3. Personal Bag Management: Ensure the ability to carry all luggage independently, including up and down stairs.
  4. Weight Limit: If checking a bag on Rustic Pathways Air, adhere to the 22-kilogram (50-pound) weight limit for one checked bag.
  5. Use Provided Packing List: Refer to the program-specific packing list provided for essential items.

Cautionary Notes

  • Be cautious about checking a bag, as personal responsibility for managing luggage is crucial.
  • Avoid exceeding weight limits, even if allowed by the airline, to ensure ease of handling.

Tips for Efficiency

  • Encourage participants to prioritize carry-on luggage for convenience and safety.
  • Emphasize the importance of personal bag management to prevent reliance on assistance.
  • Remind travelers to follow the provided packing list to ensure essential items are included.
